CHVA 007 Cape Denison Region Mawson¿s Huts are located at Cape Denison, George V Land, Australian Antarctic Territory. Cape Denison, approximately 130 hectares, is a 1.5 km-wide peninsula projecting into the centre of Commonwealth Bay, a 60 km-wide stretch of coast some 3000 km south of Hobart.

The historic site is defined on the National Heritage List as the area bounded by a line commencing at the intersection of the coastline and latitude 67°00'47'S at Land¿s End (approximately 67°00'47'S, 142°39'28'E), then northerly via the low water mark to the intersection of the coastline with 67°00'21'S (approximately 67°00'21'S 142°39'18'E), then northeasterly via a straight line to the intersection of the eastern coastline of Boat Harbour with 67°00'20' S (approximately 67°00'20'S, 142°39'27'E), then northerly and southeasterly via the low water mark to its intersection with 67°00'47'S at John O¿Groats (approximately 67°00'47'S, 142°41'27'E), then westerly via a straight line to the point of commencement.

The Main Base of the 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) was established in the Main Valley, the seaward end of which becomes Boat Harbour. The Main Hut (67º00'31'S, 142º39'39'E) was erected as close as was practicable to the edge of Boat Harbour¿about 65 m southeast. From the Main Hut, the Transit Hut (67°00'30'S, 142°39'42'E) is 40 m northeast; the Magnetograph House (67°00'21'S, 142°39'37'E) 310 m north-northeast; and the Absolute Magnetic Hut (67°00'23'S, 142°39'48'E) about 275 m northeast. On the west ridge of Main Valley is the Memorial Cross of 1913, and on a ridge to the southeast is Proclamation Hill, marking the formal possession of George V Land proclaimed in 1931.

ASMA 003 Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay Cape Denison (67°00'13"S - 67°00'050"S; 142°39'02"E - 142°41'28"E) is located in the centre of Commonwealth Bay, a 60 km-wide stretch of coast in George V Land some 3,000 km south of Hobart, Australia. The Cape itself is a rugged, 1.5 km-wide tongue of ice, snow, rock and moraine projecting into Commonwealth Bay from the steeply rising wall of the ice cap of continental Antarctica. On the western side of the Cape is Boat Harbour, a 400m-long indentation in the coast.

The designated ASMA (Map A) extends from Land's End (67° 00' 46" S, 142° 39' 24" E) in the west, along the coastline to the northern tip of the western shore of Boat Harbour (67° 00' 24" S, 142° 39' 28" E), across the mouth of Boat Harbour (in a straight north-easterly diagonal) to the northern tip of Penguin Knob (67° 00" 17" S, 142° 39' 31" E) on the eastern shore of Boat Harbour, and then along the coastline in a south-easterly direction down to John O'Groats (67° 00' 47" S, 142° 41' 27" E). The southern boundary extends in a straight line from Land's End to John O'Groats along latitude 67° 00' 47" S. With the exception of the boundary across the mouth of Boat Harbour, the northern coastal boundary extends to that land above the lowest tide.

The shoreline and the ice cliffs at both ends of the Cape (Land's End and John O'Groats) form a clearly defined boundary; as such, no boundary markers have been installed because the coast is a clearly defined boundary. Signs will be installed at the eastern (John O'Groats) and western (Land's End) limits of the southern boundary.

CHVA 001 Casey Station Region Casey station is on Bailey Peninsula, one of a series of low peninsulas adjacent to the Windmill Islands in Vincennes Bay, on the Budd Coast of Wilkes Land, East Antarctica (66¿17'S, 110¿41'E). Bailey Peninsula is a steep sided, boulder strewn rock, gravel and ice outcrop of approximately 6 km2 bounded by the sea to the north, west and south and the polar ice cap of Law Dome to the east. It has an elevation of 55.4 m at its highest point. Intervening valleys are filled with permanent snow or ice, or glacial moraine and exfoliated debris and contain water catchment areas.

Station residents have always journeyed beyond the immediate station limits, for research and recreation, particularly along the scenic coast and to nearby bird colonies, including the Law Dome, Browning and Clark Peninsulas, Robinson Ridge and the nearby abandoned Wilkes station.

Two kilometres inland from the station, the Løken Moraine stretches for 14 km along the ice cap, roughly parallel to the coast at between 100 and 150 m elevation. It is a band up to 20 m wide of small rocks and boulders of great geological diversity pushed up by the coastward movement of the Law Dome ice cap, which is the site of major glaciological studies. The blue-ice runway, which will serve the inter-continental Australian Government Antarctic air service, is to the south-west of the dome, 60 km from the station.

Jack¿s Donga field hut, on the ice slopes at the northern edge of the moraine, marks the northern boundary to normal station-based operations. It offers access to the Swain group of islands, and to the sea ice connecting the northwestern coast of Law Dome to the Peterson Bank and to Balaena Island, 40 km north of Casey. It offers an elevated (65 m) 210 degree view of Vincennes Bay and the Peterson Bank.

The southern coastal boundary to normal station-based operations is formed by the Browning Peninsula and the Vanderford Glacier, a major drainage outlet for ice flow from the ice cap to the south of Law Dome, and from the dome itself. The Vanderford, and the adjacent Adams Glacier, present an immense toothed and castellated ice front to 40 km of southern Vincennes Bay. Their discrete microclimate features katabatic winds, plumes of drift snow and localised cloud patterns.

To the northwest of Casey lies the 8 000 km2 of Vincennes Bay, which is generally ice-free from January to March, and has a variable and unstable sea ice coverage for the remainder of the year. The Petersen Bank, to the north of Vincennes Bay, is a ridge in the sea-bed extending northwest from Law Dome on which westward drifting icebergs ground, and impound permanent and semi-permanent sea ice. The bank is a distinctive feature of the Wilkes Coast in satellite weather pictures.

To the southeast of Casey, marked routes lead to sites of long-term glaciological programs at S1, Blythe Junction, S2, and Dome Summit South¿or Law Dome¿118 km southeast at 1400 m elevation. The route beyond Lanyon Junction, 16 km inland, offers a horizon to horizon aspect of the Antarctic ice cap wilderness, devoid of any other topographical feature.

The Casey region includes several field huts which may be of heritage value: ¿ Jack¿s Donga (66°13.7'S, 110°39.2'E), a sled-mounted decommissioned traverse van on the northern end of the moraine line, 8 km directly north-east from Casey. ¿ Robinson¿s Ridge Refuge (66°22.4'S, 110°35.2'E), a building from the old Casey station mounted on skids, 10.6 km south of Casey.

There are several areas in the Casey region that have been protected under the Antarctic Treaty for their internationally recognised natural values: ¿ Ardery Island (66°22'S, 110°28'E) and Odbert Island (66°22'S, 110°33'E) are among the southernmost of the Windmill Islands, lying in the south of Vincennes Bay, 12 km south of Casey, with key geological features and fulmar and petrel bird colonies. ¿ The Clark Pen

DSB 05 Community Hut When erected in 1957, this building housed the meterology and radio offices, the kitchen, dining room, pantry and a cold porch. The structure was never very satisfactory. It had major leak problems in 1958 and the exterior panels facing the sea were in need of replacement in 1960. the building offered only 'limited facilities' and in 1960 it was recommended that it be used as a recreation hut. Instead, it was demolished in 1962. The recommendation that part of the structure be re-erected north of the garage as an emergency store was not acted upon. Davis Station Artefacts
DSB 08 Community Hut / Engine Room Enclosure A link was soon erected between the Community Hut and the Engine Room. It was described as a corridor and passageway, however, additional space must have been enclosed to form a darkroom. This corridor provided access to the bathroom which was then located in the Engine Room Building. This enclosure would have been remvoed when the Community Hut was demolished in 1962. The dark room equipment was moved into the Engine Room when this was converted into the Recreation Room. although the intention was to locate the darkroom in the new Kitchen-Mess, this never occurred. CDLHMC 64 chair Wood and canvas folding chair with ferrous attachments at each of the arms and at the cross over area where the legs fold out and at the back. The back of the chair is sloping. The arms are carved with the wood rounded at the top. There are three rails at the back of the chair, the top one of which is broken and mostly missing. It appears that top rail was originally shaped and may have curved up. The seat is made of grey canvas and is attached to the wooden frame by a sleeve at each end. It is difficult to assess but it is possible that the wood was originally varnished. Two legs are attached with a wooden dowel, which has a diameter of 20 mm. The front wooden surfaces of the legs are worked into a rounded shape. The chair is 720 mm high; the width across the back of the chair is 445 mm and the width across the arms is 495 mm. the distance between the rails is 110mm. The width across the canvas seat at the front of the chair is 390 mm, the width across the canvas at the back of the seat is 350 mm. The canvas seat is 360 mm. Each arm is 580 mm long by 25 by 25 mm. The wood that makes up the rails measures 30 by 20 mm. The wood on the legs measures 35 by 20 mm. It is very similar in design to the remains of folding chairs observed on rocks to the East of the Main Hut. Cape Denison Artefacts

CDLHMC 86b cigarette (?) paper White translucent paper rectangles, consistent with cigarette papers. There are two groups of two sheets each of this paper in close proximity. At least, two sizes of paper were observed: one is 80 by 55 mm, the other 130 by 55 mm. It appears that each sheet has been cut to a different size but it is difficult to further assess them as some of them are obscured by other artefacts and ice. A match was observed under the more northerly group. The more southerly group is partly beneath tissue paper (CDLHMC 85) and ice. Cape Denison Artefacts

CDLHMC 81 cigarette tin Rectangular tinned ferrous metal cigarette container with rounded edges and rolled seams. The container has a gold coloured tinned surface. The label is printed directly onto the tinned surface (see insription below). The label consists of a green band with gold lettering. The container has a push down li, which meets the base of the box. There appears to have been a paper seal around the join between the lid and the box. It is clear that the box has been opened as the seal is broken. The seal is triangular in shape. and has "Tabard" printed in white on the black paper. The dimensions of the box are 100 mm by 80 mm by 47 mm. Cape Denison Artefacts
