Cape Hallett was named for Thomas Hallett, purser in the Erebus in 1841. A scientific station, jointly run by the US and New Zealand, was built in January and February 1957 as part of the IGY. The station was operated year round until 1964, when it became a summer only station. The station was closed in 1973, and the buildings have since been removed to allow the Adelie Penguins reclaim their rookery. US official photograph
