Esta costa fue explorada en enero y febrero de 1898 por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, quien le dio el nombre por el teniente Emile Danco, fallecido durante la expedición. Recibe este nombre el extremo de la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins comprendido entre los cabos Sterneck y Renard.
