Descubierta y denominada Tierra de Joinville por la Expedición Antártica Francesa al mando del comandante Dumont D'Urville en 1837-1840, en honor de Francisco Fernando de Orleans, príncipe de Joinville, ilustre marino francés, hijo del monarca Luis Felipe. Su verdadera naturaleza fue determinada posteriormente. Islas situadas al NE de la península Luis Felipe; constituidas por 3 grandes islas denominadas de N a S: D'Urville, Joinville y Dundee, separada de la península por el paso Antarctic.
