Criteria the
Indicator Satisfies
The following 12 out of 15 criteria
1. Serve as a robust indicator of environmental change
2. Reflect a fundamental or highly-valued aspect of the environment or an important environmental issue
3. Be either national in scope or applicable to regional environmental issues of national significance
4. Provide an early warning of potential problems
5. Be capable of being monitored to provide statistically verifiable and reproducible data that shows trends over time and, preferably, apply to a broad range of environmental regions
6. Be scientifically credible
7. Be easy to understand
8. Be monitored with relative ease
9. Be cost-effective
10. Have relevance to policy and management needs
11. Contribute to monitoring of progress towards implementing commitments in nationally important environmental policies
13. Contribute to the fulfillment of reporting obligations under international agreements
15. Where possible and appropriate, be consistent and comparable with other countries’ and state and territory indicators
For details of indicators, see the State of Environment Bibliography entries 16336 and 16337

Monitoring Location Any Named places

Geographic Coverage is

    Latitude (-70.0 to -54.0)
    Longitude (62.0 to 159.0)

Rationale For Indicator Selection The issue of permits to regulate the killing, collection, interference or
disturbance of animals and plants in the Antarctic or sub-Antarctic is for
the conservation of fauna and flora and the protection of the environment.
Data on the number of species and location of fauna and flora collected,
killed, captured and removed, interfered with or disturbed can give indicators
of the pressures that research is placing on flora and fauna.

Design and Strategy For Indicator Monitoring Program Spatial scale: Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) or the Territory of Heard
Island and the McDonald Islands (HIMI).

Frequency: Annual report

Measurement technique: Data is collected annually from researchers when they
complete the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee research application. This
data provides information on location, species, numbers and proposed
activities. In addition, data is collected through permit-holder reports and
this is collected to meet Australia's reporting obligations under the
Antarctic Treaty. This data provides information on locations, species,
numbers and activities actually carried out.

Data Quality, Interpretation and
Analysis of Indicator Data

Monitoring will enable human impacts on these activities to be assessed and to recommend planning and policy measures accordingly.
