Operation Highjump
Operation Highjump was a U.S. Navy testing and training exercise carried out
in 1947 and included the aerial photography of a great part of the coast of
Antarctica. Much of the coast was photographed for the first time.
The Australian Antarctic Division has prints, but not negatives, of photographs
taken along the coast of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Many of these
have been scanned.
Lars Christensen Expedition 1936/37
Lars Christensen, a Norwegian whaling shipowner, financed several expeditions specifically devoted to the exploration of the Antarctic continent and its waters, and participated in some of these himself.
Oblique aerial photographs were taken from a seaplane during the 1936/37 expedition. The photographs were taken during the period 16 January 1937 to 6 February 1937.
