Purpose/Comments The WHC facilitates the designation and preservation of natural and/or cultural sites of outstanding universal value. Macquarie and Heard and the McDonald Islands, Australia's only sub-Antarctic island groups, were granted World Heritage status on 3 December 1997. New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands were granted World Heritage status on 2 December 1998.
