Descubierto por la Expedición Antártica Francesa de 1837-1840, bajo la dirección de Jules Dumont D'Urville, que lo denominó con este nombre por Charles Jacquinot, capitán del barco "Zélee". Monte en forma piramidal, se encuentra completamente cubierto de nieve, de 652 metros de altura, con roca a la vista por su lado N, situado a 2 millas al S del cabo Legoupil y a 5 cables al E de rada de Covadonga, en la costa NW de la península Luis Felipe.
