Fue descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Francesa, al mando del Dr. Jean B. Charcot, durante los años 1903-1905, quien le dio el nombre del comandante Leroux de la Armada Argentina. Esta bahía fue descrita en forma más exacta por una Expedición Británica del año 1935, al mando de John Rymill en el buque "Penola".
