Esta isla fue conocida por los cazadores de focas a comienzos de 1820 y el uso del nombre Livingston está establecido internacionalmente hace más de 100 años. Mide 39 millas de largo por un ancho que varía entre un mínimo de 2 millas y un máximo de 19 millas, está situada entre las islas Greenwich y Snow, en las islas Shetland del Sur. La isla es de relieve muy irregular, las partes central y occidental son planas, de altura moderada. Sus costas son altas e inaccesibles formadas por hielo y glaciares.
