Fue descubierto y denominado por la Expedición Antártica Francesa de los años 1903-1905, que lideró el Dr. Jean B. Charcot, recibió su nombre en honor a Eleuthere Mascart, Físico y director de la Oficina Meteorológica Central de Francia. Toma este nombre el extremo NE de la isla Adelaida. En sus proximidades se han observado témpanos varados.
