Su nombre data del año 1820 y se le dio por el entonces soberano reinante de Inglaterra. Mide 44 millas de largo por 15 de ancho, es la más extensa de las islas Shetland del Sur. La isla es de aspecto macizo y altura moderada, máxima 655 mts. Está totalmente cubierta por una gruesa capa de hielo de la que sobresalen algunos picachos.
