En 1935 la Expedición Británica de John Rymill, la denominó así por Philip Runciman, presidente de la Junta de Directores de Whites Southhampton Yachtbuilding and Engineering Company Limites, donde fue preparado el buque expedicionario "Penola" antes de zarpar en 1934. Situada al centro de la entrada oriental del canal isla Negra que corre por el SW de isla Skúa, islas Argentine.
