Descubierto y denominado por la Expedición Americana del capitán de fragata Finne Ronne, entre los años 1947-1948, en honor de Russel Owen, corresponsal periodístico de la expedición Byrd (1928-1930). Descarga occidental hacia el mar de la depresión entre las montañas de la península Luis Felipe, que la cruza al S del cabo Roquemaurel.
