Esta bahía fue avistada seguramente por el Dr. Jean B. Charcot en el año 1909. El nombre fue propuesto por miembros de la Expedición Británica de 1934-1937, en honor a John R. Rymill, australiano, jefe de la Expedición. Recibe este nombre en la ensenada que se forma a 8 millas al SSE de morro Roca Roja; mide 7 millas de ancho en su boca por 4 de saco, limita por el NW en los islotes Refugio. La bahía se presenta por lo general cubierta por una gruesa capa de hielo.
