Recibe su nombre por la vecindad con el mar de Weddell. El campo de hielo Filchner presenta en su frente hacia el mar, una barrera de hielos continua, que alcanza una altura media de 40 metros. Nace al W en el cabo Adams y avanza hacia el SE hasta alcanzar su punta más austral en lat. 78º 15' S - long. 45º 20' W. Esta barrera limita al S con el mar de Weddell y frente a ella se observa una zona de aguas libres de un ancho considerable durante la temporada de verano.
