rising to c. 1600m, N of Trench Glacier, Alexander Island, was photographed from the air by Ellsworth, 23 November 1935 (Joerg, 1936); roughly surveyed by BGLE in 1936 (Stephenson and Fleming, 1940); resurveyed by FIDS from "Stonington Island", 1948-49, and named after Athelstan (895-940), Saxon King of England (925-940), in association with the names of other Saxon Kings of England in this area (APC, 1955, p.4; DOS 610 sheet W 70 68, 1960; BAS 250P sheet SR 19-20/9, 1-DOS 1978).
