Named after Eric Hatfield Back (1920-1992), as Surg. Lieut., RNVR, medical officer on Operation "Tabarin"; Port Lockroy, 1943-44, and Hope Bay, 1944-45; also meteorological observer. (APC, 1993, p.3).
