S-most group of Biscoe Islands, including Bedford Island and Irving Island, were photographed from the air by FIDASE, 1956-57; in association with the names of pioneers of cold-climate physiology grouped in this area, named after Sir Joseph Barcroft (1872-1947), Irish physiologist; Professor of Physiology, Cambridge University, 1925-47, who carried out research into the effects of high altitude and cold (APC, 1960, p.2; BA chart 3571, 14.vii.1961).
