flowing SW into Gilbert Glacier, N Alexander Island, was seen from the air and roughly mapped by BGLE, 1 February 1937 (Stephenson, 1940, map facing p.232); following map compilation by FIDS in 1959 from air photographs taken by RARE in 1947, named after Béla Bartók (1881-1945), Hungarian composer, in association with the names of other composers in this area (APC, 1961, p.2; BA chart 3571, 14.vii.1961; BAS 250P sheet SR 19-20/5 (Ext.), 1-DOS 1978).
