E-most of Wauwermans Islands, Bismarck Strait, was called descriptively Isla Coy [=hammock island] (Argentina. MM, 1953, top view p.270b); following survey by an RN Hydrographic Survey Unit from HMS Protector, 1956-57, named Clear Island because its ice cap is conspicuous from all directions as a mark for mariners (APC, 1959a, p.5; BA chart 3572, 12.viii.1960).
