NW side of Prince Gustav Channel, Trinity Peninsula, was surveyed by FIDS from "Hope Bay", 1960-61; in association with the names of pioneers of overland mechanical transport grouped in this area, named after Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot (1724-1804), French military engineer who designed and built the first fullsized vehicle propelled by its own engine (steam), in 1769 (APC, 1964, p.3; BAS 250 sheet SP 21-22/13, 1-DOS 1974).
