rising to c. 1400m on N side of Read Mountains, Shackleton Range, were photographed from the air by USN in 1967 and surveyed from the ground by BAS from Halley, 1968-71; in association with the names of geologists grouped in this area, named after Gideon Algernon Mantell (1790-1852), British surgeon and geologist, known for his discovery of the iguanodon and three other fossil reptiles ([in 80°38'S 24°34'W] APC, 1974, p.5; [co-ordinates corrected] BAS 250P sheet SU 26-30/1, 1-DOS 1978; APC, 1982, p.3).
