flowing E into Whirlwind Inlet, Bowman Coast, was sighted by Wilkins on his flight of 20 December 1928 and photographed from the air by USAS in 1940; surveyed by FIDS from "Stonington Island" and from "Hope Bay" in 1947; in association with the names of glaciologists grouped in this area, named after François Emile Matthes (1874-1948), American glacial geomorphologist and glaciologist of Dutch birth with USGS, 1896-1947; Chairman, Committee on Glaciers, American Geophysical Union, 1931-48, and sometime Secretary, International Commission on Snow and Glaciers (BA chart 3570, 4.vi.1954; APC, 1955, p.15; DCS 601 sheet 67 64, 1955).
