Named after Robert Saunders Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville (1771-1851), First Lord of the Admiralty, 1812-27 and 1828-30, whose name was applied by Weddell to Laurie Island in the form "Melville's Island" (Weddell, 1825, map gacing p.25).
