W of Berry Head, Signy Island, was roughly charted by Sørlle, 1912-13, and called Palmer Bay, probably after Capt. N.B. Palmer (Palmer Archipelago, q.v.) (Sørlle, chart, 1913; Marr, 1935, p.325); recharted by DI in 1933 (BA chart 1775, 17.viii.1934); following survey by FIDS from Signy in 1947, named Stygian Cove from its gloomy aspect caused by steep cliffs on the W side (Stygian also chanced to be the name of the surveyor's wartime submarine) (APC, 1955, p.20; DOS 510 South Orkney Islands, West Sheet, 1963; 210 Signy Island sheet, 1-DOS 1973). Stygian Bay, in error (BA, 1966, p.43).
