rising to c.1400 m between the heads Cornwall Glacier and Glen Glacier, Read Mountains, Shackleton Range, were surveyed by TAE in October 1957, photographed from the air by USN in 1967, and further surveyed from the ground by BAS from Halley, 1968-71; in association with the names of geologists grouped in this area, named after Karl Alfred von Zittel (1839-1904), German palaeontologist who specialized on fossil sponges (APC, 1974, p.7; BAS 250P sheet SU 26-30/1, 1-DOS 1978).
