A most impressive mountain, 3087m high, seen from the Axel Heiberg Glacier, lying about 7 miles east of Mt Fridtjof Nansen, and overlooking the Axel Heiberg Icefalls. Surveyed and named by the Southern Party of the NZGSAE, 1961-62, for Berndt Balchen, pilot and companion of Amundsen on Artic flights and pilot of the Byrd South Pole flight of 1929 on which he flew down the Axel Heiberg Glacier.
