Named by United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) (1999) after Lieutenant Robert L. Bellafronto, Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), U.S. Navy, a public works officer at McMurdo Station in U.S. Navy (USN) Operation Deep Freeze (OpDFrz) 1977 and 1978.
