Surveyed and named in February 1957 by the New Zealand Party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE), 1956-58. Given this name at the suggestion of the Geological Party of this expedition because of difficulties encountered in an attempted descent of this glacier.
