This name originates from New Zealand. It is part of the New Zealand Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
The name given by Ross, on 27 January 1841, to what he at first though was an island and then thought was a part of the mainland. Later it was proved to be an island and was named Ross Island in his honour.
