The feature was named in 1982 by the NZ-APC from a proposal by Graeme G.C. Claridge, soil scientist with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Zealand. One of several names in the Asgard Range from Norse mythology, Jotunheim being the home of the giants.
