Named by the Victoria University of Wellington Antarctic Expedition (VUWAE), 1958-59, for Barrie McKelvey, a geologist of Victoria University, who with Peter Webb, conducted the first geological exploration of this area in 1957-58, and was again in the Wright Valley in 1958-59 with VUWAE.
