An extensive lowland ice sheet occupying the whole of the coastal platform between the Mawson and Fry Glaciers. Surveyed in November 1957 and named by the Northern Survey Party of the NZTAE, 1956-58, after Captain L E G Oates, who reached the South Pole with Captain Scott in 1912.
