The Commonwealth Range branches at about latitude 82°20'S and forms two chains of mountains separated by the Hood Glacier. The separation Range is the eastern branch with Mt Patrick in the south and Mt Beacon in the north. It separated with the Hood and the Canyon Glaciers. Named by the NZ Alpine Club Antarctic Expedition, 1959-60, because of the separation of the mountains by the glacier.
