The isolation of the valley reminded the personnel of the Victoria University of Wellington Antarctic Expedition (VUWAE), 1960-61 of James Hilton's Shangri-La in "Lost Horizon". Names given to features in this area on loose theme include Buddha Pass and Mount Lama.
