Low, ice-covered cape forming the NW extremity of Charcot Island. First seen from the air and roughly mapped by Sir Hubert Wilkins on Dec. 29, 1929, in a flight from the William Scoresby. Named by Wilkins for R. Admiral Richard E. Byrd, USN, (1888-1957) noted American explorer and leader of five expeditions to Antarctica, 1928-57. Remapped from air photos taken by USN Operation HighJump in 1947 by Searle of the FIDS in 1960.
