The feature was explored from the ground and photographed from the air by the USAS, 1939-41, RARE, 1947-48, and was surveyed by FIDS, 1946-48. Named by US-ACAN in 1977 for Cdr. Robert T. Getman, USCG, Executive Officer, USCGC Southwind, USN Operation Deep Freeze, 1969.
