Mapped by USGS from aerial photographs taken by the U.S. Navy, 1966-69. In association with the names of oceanographers grouped in this area, named by the UK-APC in 1977 after Bruce C. Heezen (1924-77), American marine geologist and oceanographer; Professor of Geology, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, Columbia University, 1964-77.
