Mapped by USGS from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960-63. Named by US-ACAN for Joe D. McKinnis of USN Squadron VX-6, Aviation Electronics Technician and air crewman on LC-130F aircraft in five Operation Deep Freeze deployments through 1969.
