It stands just E of the base of Canisteo Peninsula and overlooks Cosgrove Ice Shelf. Mapped from air photos taken by USN Operation HighJump, 1946-47. Named by US-ACAN for Herbert P. Nickens, map compilation specialist who contributed significantly to the construction of USGS sketch maps of Antarctica.
