Feature type: Moraine
This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
A loose rock-covered area of stagnant ice in the Vestfold Hills about 3 km by 1 km in area. Thermo karst features such as hummocks, lakes, and under-ice streams are common. The entire surface is unstable during the summer melt. The complete cover of loose rocks makes the area strikingly different from the bedrock areas of the Vestfold Hills.
Named in view of the remarkable similarity of the pock-marked unstable surface to a World War 1 battlefield.
