Feature type: Water body
This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer.
A small lake visible on the 1991 Interim Image Map but not shown on the 1971 map, located on the stream about 300 m south of Rookery Creek. On the 1971 map this stream is erroneously shown flowing to the sea; in fact it terminates in Floating Island Lake above the coastal cliffs. The interesting feature of the lake is the presence of two floating peat islands which move about with shifts in wind direction. The names Floating Island Tarn and its alternative, Floating Island Lake, have been in common usage for many years, and the former is used in "Subantarctic Macquarie Island: Environment and Biology", P.M.Selkirk, R.D.Seppelt & D.R.Selkirk, Cambridge University Press, 1990.
