El nombre corresponde al apellido de Anelio Aguayo Lobo, médico veterinario del Instituto Antártico Chileno, quien sobrevoló el área en un helicóptero de la Armada de Chile y participó en el primer censo de mamíferos marinos, efectuado durante la Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1965-1966. Punta que se ubica directamente al SSE de la punta La Caverna, en la costa oriental del cabo Shirreff de la isla Livingston, islas Shetland del Sur.
