El nombre fue colocado por personal científico del Instituto Antártico Chileno durante la Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1965-1966, debido a la extensión de este litoral arenoso. Playa que se extiende inmediatamente al S de la punta Del Medio y que llega hasta la punta Yuseff, en la costa oriental del cabo Shirreff de la isla Livingston, islas Shetland del Sur.
