Named by United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) (2005) after Gonzalo J. Hernandez, Department of Earth and Space Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, WA. United States Antarctic Program (USAP) high-latitude atmospheric research at Amundsen-Scott South Pole and McMurdo Stations. 15 field seasons 1991-2004.
