Narrative

The ocean area between Antarctic Peninsula and Coats Land W of Dronning Maud Land. After James Weddell, Master, RN, who discovered the sea in 1823. He named it George IV Sea. The present name, honoring the discoverer, was proposed by Dr. Karl Fricker in 1900.
