Origin

This name originates from United States of America. It is part of the United States Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

Narrative

A compact group of mountain heights in NW Churchill Mountains between Zeller Glacier and Sefton Glacier where the glaciers enter the larger Byrd Glacier. The feature is 10 mi long and rises to 2050 m in Mount Rainbow. Named by US-ACAN after Gen. James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle (1896-1993) USAF, American aviator and hero who visited McMurdo Station in 1962. In 1942 then Lt. Col. Doolittle imitated heavy aircraft operations from the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Hornet leading to carrier-based R4D operations from Philippine Sea during Operation Highjump.
