Narrative

Mud volcano, offshore South Shetland Islands, west to Elephant Island. The top is at 1990 m below the sea level with an elevation of about 185 m. The extension is 239 km2. The mud volcano Sernio was discovered during a leg of R/V OGS-Explora in the austral summer 2003-04 in the frame of the BSR project (Gas hydrates: impact on climate environment of the sub-Antarctic regions). The Sernio mud volcano was sampled with one gravity core that shows the presence of hydrocarbons in the pore space. The name Sernio comes after a mountain in the Carnic Alps (Val Aupa), more commonly known as the "mountain of women", since it was climbed for the first time by two women, Minetta and Annina Grassi, 21 August 1879. Since the leader of the BSR project is a woman who lived in the same valley, the names of mud volcanoes discovered in the frame of the BSR project are associated with the names of mounts in the same valley as Mount Sernio.
