This name originates from Italy. It is part of the Italy Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
Mud volcano, offshore South Shetland Islands, west to Elephant Island. The top is at 2216 m below the sea level with an elevation of about 255 m. The extension is 94 km2. The mud volcano Vualt was discovered during a leg of R/V OGS-Explora in the austral summer 2003-04 in the frame of the project BSR (Gas hydrates: impact on climate environment of the sub-Antarctic regions). The name Vualt is the name of a mountain in the Aupa Valley (Carnic Alps), in proximity of the Mount Sernio. The Mount Sernio is commonly known as the "mountain of women", since it was climbed for the first time by two women, Minetta and Annina Grassi, 21 August 1879. Since the leader of the BSR project is a woman who lived in the same valley, the names of mud volcanoes discovered in the frame of the BSR project are associated with the names of mounts around Mount Sernio.
